Anywhere But Here, is a fictional novel about a story of a young girl and her mother. Her mother has a wild heart and carefree attitude and encourages her daughter to be the same.
The beginning of the story starts off with the sentence, "We fought." This is the base and start of the story. The first couple pages explain the way her mother and her would get in fights and it would end up with them on non-speaking terms and her on the side of the road. Her mother would tell her to get out and then she would drive off, only to turn around and come back to get here when she could no longer see her in her rear view window. This was the relationship Ann and her mother had. One of little communication and of desertion when in difficult circumstances.
As the story continues the pair hit a bump in their journey and are required to stay in Arizona for a week. During this time the mother looks at house that is nowhere in her price range and lies directly to the face of the realtor. She takes advantage of a realtor, and a perfume maker during their stay in Arizona. These are the lessons she teaches her daughter. Ways to manipulate and use and abuse people that will let you take advantage of them.
This story connects to my project because it tells of a story where a mother lacks parenting skills and it affects her daughter. Her lack of communication and integrity affects her daughter. How she reacts and chooses to live affects her daughter since they are each others only family since her mother took her away from the rest of their family. I think the journey and growth of the daughter will help me to see the affects of carefree parenting.
